What is a Septum Piercing?

The septum piercing is a perforation performed in the nasal septum, a cartilage that functions as a dividing wall between the nostrils. Normally what is pierced is not the cartilage itself, but the small gap between the cartilage and the bottom of the nose which is usually about 1.6mm wide, although sometimes it is stretched to a larger extent.

Many nerve endings go through the nose. That’s why piercings in this area of the body can be somewhat annoying when they done, although the pain level depends on each person. The healing process of this particular piercing is 6 to 8 months, although from the second month it should look perfect and should cause no more discomfort.

Types of Septum Piercing Jewelry

There are many types of jewelry that we can place in a septum piercing, everything depends on your personal style and taste. There’s a lot of different jewelry specially designed for the septum piercing, made of a great variety of materials and colors to choose from.

Ring

The nose ring is the most common and recommended type of jewelry, especially for those who are new to the art of nasal perforations. That’s mainly because in the healing process it is much easier to clean and keep it perfect.

U-Bend

This piece is specially designed for the septum piercing. It is a U-shaped piercing, hence its name. This jewelry has the advantage that it is easy to hide if necessary i.e. to comply with a strict dess code, since you can put both sides inside the nostrils and completely conceal its appearance.

Spikes

Another option that we can choose as a jewel for our septum piercing is the spiked jewelry. This kind of piece is placed horizontally in the nose. This piercing requires a little more experience because of its shape, as it can be annoying if you’re not used to having any kind of facial perforations. It consist of a straight tube whose ends end in a conical shape, as if it were an arrow.

History and Meaning of the Septum Piercing

The septum piercing has been a very popular trend among dancers from the south of India (Kuchipudi, Bharatnatyam) and among some Native Americans throughout history. Leaders Shawnee, Tecumseh and Tenskwatawa wore these piercings.

The piercing Septum is popular in rural areas of India, Nepal and Bangladesh. In India this piercing is given the name of Nathori. The deities Lord Krishna and his consort Radharani are sometimes represented with this piercing.

Bengali women traditionally wore this piercing to show that they were married. Nathori jewelry is usually golden with a tear that hangs and moves through the hoop. Some Bengali women in rural areas still have this tradition.

Septum Piercing Aftercare

Septum piercings are very easy to clean. It is recommended to clean twice a day with antibacterial soap, an essential step for a quick healing and to avoid infections. A dirty septum will start to smell bad due to the accumulation of dead cells. As it is just under your nose, you will immediately realize that something is wrong thanks to the unpleasant smell. Therefore it is important to keep it always clean and listen to the advice of specialists.
